Two Brother's Return Home From Iraq

Two Madison brothers who served in the battlefields of Iraq are now safely back home.

Rose Smith has something to smile about. Her sons Joe and Dereal Alexander are back home after serving a year in Iraq.

The brothers were part of the 269th engineering company who came home Sunday to a heroes welcome in Live Oak.

Their time spent in Iraq has made these brothers realize the importance of freedom.

"We've been blessed to be here in America with all the benefits we have our family and everything. I'm not going to take that for granted ever."

The two brothers enlisted together as reserves, serving side by side, making sure they each returned home safely.

"He was on a 30 day convoy and escort. You had to worry about him and you had to worry home and now we don't have to worry about nothing but keeping your family safe.

These days, the brothers share memories of their time in Iraq showing pictures to friends and family. For their mom, Rose Smith, seeing her sons in the flesh brings her pure joy.

"It feels very good. I'm very relieved that they're home. I don't have to worry about them, but I think about the other soldiers. So I have to continue to pray for them."

She hopes that someday families across this country will feel the same sense of excitement she's now feeling.

This Saturday, the family will be hosting a mini family reunion. Miss rose will be fixing some of her sons’ favorite dishes.
