One Dead, One Wounded in Police Shooting

ATLANTA (AP) _ Fulton County police say a Marietta man is dead and his brother wounded by officers outside a bar.

Family members say 26-year-old Ron Pettaway died at the scene early yesterday. Twenty-seven-year-old Roy Pettaway the Third is in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Police spokesman Corporal Gary Syblis says one of the brothers was in a fight inside the bar and then the two fought with police who arrived at the Frozen Palace near College Park. Syblis says charges are pending against the surviving brother.

But the men's father, Roy Pettaway Junior, says his sons were unarmed when they were shot. And the Reverend Markel Hutchins, an activist who has been the spokesman for the family of a 92-year-old woman killed in a shootout with police last year, met with family members yesterday afternoon and called for an investigation into the shooting.

Police did NOT respond to the family's claims, saying they are investigating the shooting.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting at the request of Fulton County Police Chief George Coleman.
