Budget woes continue to plague the Thomasville / Thomas County Humane Society.
The cash strapped department took another blow as a budget increase is denied by county commissioners. At Monday's budget hearing the board of directors for the humane society requested an additional $37,000 for the 2010 budget. Officials say the only way the money would be available is to raise taxes.
Joyce Patterson Thomas County Humane Society Director says, "There are days when we get 30-40 cats in one day or 20 -30 dogs. It gets more difficult, we're going backward instead of forward as far as the budget goes. We're receiving money that is equivalent to a 2004 budget."
Officials say they are looking into other ways to bring more money to the humane society because a lack of funding is causing about 300 animals being euthanized each month.

I would like to know where you got the incorrect information that all animal shelters receive money for every animal euthanized? That is WRONG!!!!
i can understand the need for more money in the budget. yet, i also know that the state government pay EVERY shelter a minumin of $67.50 for every dog that has to be put down. so IF 300 dogs are put down, that is over $2,000 a month / $24,000 a yr. i know a lot of people who earn less than $14,000 a yr. so WHERE is all this money going to ? not to mention, where is all the money going from fund raisers ? would it help if more people would donate their time and labor ? what would be needed to help our shelter fall inside it present budget ?
