For about a year Sopchoppy city officials have been talking about building a bigger city hall and it's finally here. This is the first week that the building has been opened and city officials say it has been a wonderful transition. The new city hall is 5,500 square feet, compared to the old one which is only 3,000.
"We come to work in a clean building and one that is safe. We were having some problems in the other building and the wiring wasn't the best and the plumbing wasn't the best. this is just a big change for us," said Jackie Lawhon, the city clerk.
The commission chambers now seats 56 people. There is also a drive thru for city residents that need to pay their water bills.
The city council used local funds to build it. Officials are still trying to decide what to do with the old building which is across the street from the new city hall.
An open house and ribbon cutting to celebrate the new building is scheduled for December 14th. The open house starts at 3pm and the ribbon cutting is at 4pm.
