Senior Olympics This Week in Valdosta

The events got underway Wednesday and go through Saturday.

The unmistakable sound of a game of pool marks the start of the Annual Golden Olympics in Valdosta. Senior citizens from around south Georgia are taking part, and they say its a great way to stay healthy.

"It gets me out of the house and I'm with the other seniors and we socialize and we play and we laugh, we just have a good time,” says participant Mavis Watson.

The games range from billiards to bowling, and event dancing and outdoor sports later in the week.

Organizers say the focus isn't finishing first, but rather keeping active and enjoying life.

"I think all of us are young after 50. We get younger and our second childhood is a joke, but I think we all love to do things like this, we have all kinds of programs to keep us going at all times,” Rick Means of Valdosta Senior Center explains.

These Golden Olympians are encouraging all seniors to come out and take part in the games.

"If you're elderly, and sitting around the house and talking to the walls, get out of there! Lets go out and meet people, and enjoy yourself,” comments John Jordan, who Enjoys the Golden Olympics.

"Come on out and participate, because you never know how much you're going to enjoy it until you get here,” Watson adds.

And with the free activities on Friday and Saturday, there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved in.

Valdosta's Golden Olympics will take place at the Azalea City Senior Center.
