Leon County Woman Shot by Sheriff's Deputies

Shots rang out in southern Leon County and now one woman is hospitalized with a gunshot wound. The woman's name has not yet been released.

Leon County sheriff's deputies say they fired a shot at the woman in self-defense.

"She seemed to be a nice lady, but I've been here since 1994 and I've never seen her do any harm to anybody,” comments neighbor Frankie Knight.

Tallahassee resident Frankie Knight could not believe her neighbor, whose name has not been released, was involved in a shoot out with sheriff's deputies.

Around 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon, deputies were called to 4365 Slash Pine Lane after receiving a report that the woman was causing a disturbance to her neighbors.

Deputies say when they arrived on scene, the woman was acting in a way that was harmful to herself and to other residents, and that's when a taser gun was utilized.

Deputies then say because of the woman's loose clothing, the taser was ineffective and that's when she reportedly ran back into her home.

"At that time, the woman came to the door with a pistol, opened fire on the deputies who immediately returned fire, and was able to take her into custody, It appears she suffered one non-fatal gunshot wound,” adds CPT Mike Wood of the Criminal Investigation Bureau for the Leon County Sheriff's Office.

"We had to take deadly force action against one of the citizens in our community. I can assure you this is very serious, and will be investigated very thoroughly, by ourselves and the state attorney's office,” Wood adds.

Following the shooting the woman was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. This incident is still under investigation.
