Homeless Shelter Braces For Cold Weather
As the Big Bend area prepares for a cold front to hit the area in a few days, the Tallahassee Homeless Shelter has growing concerns about keeping the homeless safe.

This year, the day after Thanksgiving will bring more than just great shopping deals... chilly temperatures will also be blowing into the area.
And for the homeless and homeless shelters, cold weather can present deadly challenges.
Last Winter four homeless people were found dead... and it was determined that at least two of those deaths were partially caused by exposure to cold, overnight weather.
"They had been staying here previously but they left because of the tension in here with the overcrowded conditions," says Mel Eby, the director of the Tallahassee Homeless Shelter.
The Big Bend area is expecting near freezing temperatures in a couple of days... and Eby is worried about what the cold weather could mean for people like Cassie McGowan and her two young children who have been staying at the shelter for a few weeks.
"They're helping me by showing me where to look for a job and helping me with getting assistance," says McGowan.
But Eby says it's the men who really feel the squeeze at the shelter when it gets cold. The men are asked to voluntarily sleep outside in a fenced in area when the shelter is overcrowded. Eby says any donations can be helpful at this time of year and is thankful when folks like David Powe brings by whatever he can spare.
"Here there's a real need, and the people really need anything. It's the real deal here so people really need things to get by," says Powe.
Even now, the Shelter averages 225 people a night but it can only hold 175... so when a cold front hits they know they're in for a long night.
The Shelter says sleeping bags are the most needed item when the weather gets very cold because so many are asked to sleep outside.
