Husband and Wife Cancer Survivors

A lot of the people taking part in this event are friends, families and supporters of people who have battled cancer, but there are hundreds of survivors who are lacing up as well.

Here's the story of an amazing couple that has been married for 43 years.

Jim Ward says it all started with a pain in his hip while taking his daily walk in 1999. After several visits to the doctor he was diagnosed with a form of kidney cancer.

He was told at stage four, only 18 percent survive one year.

“I wallowed in self pity for about 15 minutes and then decided to go on and deal with it the best I can, and that's what I did,” says Jim.

With his wife by his side, he successfully completed experimental treatments, but cancer wasn't done with Jim. A year later, he sensed something was wrong, so he went back to battle again, and again found himself cancer free. Little did he know, his biggest supporter wasn't.

“I never in my wildest dreams thought it would be breast cancer. When he called with the news I was devastated,” says wife, Carolyn.

“She had been so supportive of me when I wanted to give up she would let me. It was my turn, but I didn't want a turn,” says Jim.

Strong in their faith. They prayed, again and rejoiced in Carolyn's remission. In fact, she says it’s been a blessing, saying life has taken on new meaning.

Jim is still fighting cancer. In 2003 doctors found spots in his lungs, but he finished his last day of radiation treatment and they are again, hoping for the best.
