According to arrest papers, the mother held the child in front of her to try to block a punch from the father. Arrest papers say a young couple brought their one-month-old daughter to the Emergency Room Tuesday, saying she was lethargic and her eyes would not focus.
Doctors soon called the authorities.
"Doctors and nurses are trained to look for specific items (edit) so they have some educated judgments on what to look for, what questions to ask and how to make that determination," says Warren Jones, TMH spokesman.
The hospital of course cannot comment on specifics in this case, but the Sheriff's Department said the infant was suffering from cranial bleeding.
When they began questioning the parents, a spokeswoman says, their story kept changing.
LT Linda Butler, LCSO Spokeswoman, says, “It was discovered that during a fight Monday night, the mother picked up the baby, put 'em between the father and the mother while they were fighting and the father ended up hitting the baby in the back of the head with a fist."
In order to protect the baby's identity, we cannot release the names of either of her parents, but both are charged with aggravated child abuse. The baby daughter is still hospitalized recovering from her injuries.
Both the baby and her one-year-old sister are now in protective custody as their parents face felony child abuse charges.
At last check, the baby was in stable condition and the parents remained in jail.
