"We got a sidewalk. Our very first sidewalk," says Zoe Mansfield, city manager of St. Marks.

According to a prominent sign in town, St. Marks was established in 1827. But 2009 seemed like the right time to construct the first sidewalk - since the city didn't have to pay for it.

"That's what the stimulus money was for. It was for improvements," says Mansfield.

The federal government paid nearly $38,000 for the sidewalk, that sits on Port Leon Drive in front of city hall and the post office. Officials chose this street because it's one of the busiest.

"People come to the post office and they come to city hall. And they pay their utility bill," says Mansfield. Construction of the sidewalk ended in October. Since then, people in town have been using it often.

"The residents who live here think it's cute because it doesn't really go anywhere," says resident Chris Tumlin.

"I wish it would go all the way up and all the way down," says resident Lisa Rhodes. "I don't see no purpose right there."

"Right now, it's a sidewalk to nowhere and we hope someday it will be a sidewalk to everywhere," says resident Denise Savoy-Butler.

City officials agree; they're anticipating it will lead to bigger things down the road.

"We hope to expand our sidewalk into town where we would like to have like a town center with shops," says Mansfield. "And we're really looking forward to building up our town."

What a waste of tax dollars,we have a lot of people in this town that believe in building on every spot, that we need condos, malls, more homes so we can have more crime and pollution.I guess it should be against the law to live in a small town, quiet and peaceful and not pollute some of the cleanest waters in the state.
