Families sat down to a plate of hot food and cold drinks at one of the only restaurants open in town on Christmas Day, Hills Country Kitchen in Perry Florida. But diners say the gift they received after taking their last bite is what made their meals extra special.

Free Food.

Owners say the tradition started years ago. On Christmas day, unsuspecting diners sit down to eat one of their hearty meals and when it's time to pay, they're told the meal is a gift.

"The people come in we just give them a certain menu and we lay it down and then when we come over back to them we tell them its free and if they would like to leave a donation they can. And the proceeds will go towards the Shriners hospital," said restaurant volunteer, Tammy Smith.

Diners at Hills Country Kitchen got a taste of the Christmas spirit with a side of gravy. And they say the true gift is not just the free meal... but the family time and good food.

Many of the restaurant's customers were surprised to find out the meal was free and offered to leave something extra to show their appreciation.

Link Claverie is a Perry resident and he said he's grateful for the meal. "Hey, I always like free. We do love to contribute too," he said. "That's what's great. We'll pay and eat free, how's that?"

Diners say they came in hungry and are leaving happy and filled with food and holiday cheer.

This is the first time in four years the restaurant has hosted this food filled tradition.

Now these people have the RIGHT understanding of the gift of giving. I applaud them. Giving of their time to serve others and NOT charging, but ONLY asking for a donation to a charity IF possible, is the true AMERICAN spirit and the roots of what this country was built on. It is good to see that there are those that still BELIEVE in that true foundation. You all will be blessed for this sincere gift of giving. Thank you.
