FSU Police and the Emergency Management Department got a briefing of the school's new Emergency Alert Siren System. The three siren system plays different messages aimed at reaching all thirty thousand plus FSU students.
“We’re looking at using bell towers and chimes on the hour, just to keep people aware and make sure the system’s working, but periodically we’ll change it around," said FSU President T.K. Wetherell.
The new system can also alert students if there's a shooter on campus.
"It makes me feel safer in knowing that I'll hear information sooner and I'll be more aware. I think what happened at Virginia it was really tragic and a lot of the students weren't really sure what was going on," said FSU student Jasmine Selph.
Soon after the Virginia Tech deadly attacks FSU installed an emergency text messaging system. A new siren means more people get the message.
"I don't have a text messaging cell phone so if I get a text message sent to my phone I can't see it. The sirens I can hear it so I know what's going on," said FSU John Hughes.
Now with a click of one button everyone can be notified, through email, text message and now through siren. The new system cost 100 thousand dollars. Wetherell says that's a small price to pay when it comes to ensuring the safety of FSU.
FAMU already has an emergency siren system in place. It added a second siren in April.
