UPDATED 01/26 3:00 p.m.

At first glance it looks like a typical neighborhood, but on Monday night, an attempted robbery changed everything.

"Three gun shots said boom boom boom and my brother-in-law was laying down so we ran to the door and we see police cars come flying around here," neighbor Seikeshia Williams said.

Moultrie Police say around eight in the evening on Monday, three men knocked on the door at 1011 Joe Louis Avenue. When no one answered they walked around to the back and got into an altercation with two men.

Police say shots rang out and when they arrived on scene they found 19-year-old Juan Lopez laying in a pool of blood shot in the torso.

He died at his home and police say it may have been because he was a migrant worker.

"They become a target. I'm pretty sure everybody knows what the message is about the Mexicans, they sometimes carry cash and that's not true," Lieutenant Alfonzo Cook with the Moultrie Police Department said.

Katrina Thornton lives right next door to Lopez, and she says the murder has her worried about her family.

"We been here forever and it's getting worse than it was. And right next door its just too close to home. I have four children and they were scared to go to sleep," Thornton said.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation is working with Moultrie Police to solve the case. Authorities say right now they are following strong leads.
