It was chaotic the whole thing, but it's chaos down there, it really is," says Margie Walker, who's been an RN at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for 25 years.
Make shift tents as far as the eye can see, orphaned children, the smell of death.
This was the reality five men and women from Tallahassee faced from the moment they stepped foot in Haiti.
"I've been to third world countries before but never anything like this. It was completely an eye opening experience and about as humbling as anything that you could imagine," says Charlie Jaquet.
The group were just a handful in roughly 140 other volunteers from the non-profit Proyecto America who offered what medical assistance they could to the sick and the wounded.
Nourishing their bodies with food and water and healing them with companionship.
"We did the best that we could. We handed out a lot of water, a lot of meals, and helped a lot of people, but you can't leave there and not think of what you could have done to help people even more," says Charlie Jaquet.
The volunteers say water was the most sought after item, in some cases holding more value than gold itself.
"Water seemed to be the most dangerous thing to pass out where we were," says Margie Walker.
The group spent two days in Cite Soleil, the city of the sun, a charming name for a place deemed one of the most dangerous cities on Earth.
Jaquet is convinced that the hostility he saw was not because the Haitian people are bad, but because they are desperate people in a bad situation.
