Deane Harris is a professional breeder and trainer of dogs---one of the best in the world at both. At his home in Jasper, the former executive works with pure bred Llewellen setters, the perfect hunting dog. He's spent the past 58 years doing what he loves, and doing it his way.
"All you do is sandpaper their natural talent and get them to do it for you, not for themselves."
He also trains his dogs with love and affection, or as he calls it, 9 parts love, 1 part fear. Harris believes a dog must be disciplined, not punished.
"Today they train with electronic collars put around their stomach. They shock the dog and we don't do that. But you end up with a mechanical dog, not a loving dog."
Harris won't divulge his list of clients, but there are some famous ones including the President of Mondavi wine in California. His customers are happy with his work, on his website he has a 99.42-percent approval rating.
"I've got 15-16 borders," said friend Theo Bean, "I've got a lot of dogs, but I never seen a man that loves the dogs as much as he does."
"I don't know anyone else to compare him to because of the age for one thing and and experience for another thing," said fellow hunter and friend Bob Smith.
Harris' dogs are duck hunters, mostly quail and dove. He takes them at 10 weeks, works with them again at six months, and by eight months--Deane Harris has your dog in tip top shape, ready to work.
"When we're done, someone has the dog for 12-14 years as a companion who's a hunting friend and understands every problem you have and they are right there for you," said Harris, "They are better than most humans, although I've been married for 53 years...so I have a good human."

I have visited with Dean and got his help a few times. He is a true gentleman and knows his dogs. Ted from Dothan would know better than to spout such drivel if he knew Dean and his training program.
There is no reason to put an electronic collar on a bird dog if you never take them off a rope! Take this story with a grain of salt. WCTV will say you are the KIng of Prussia if you tell them you are. Maybe if he properly learned how to use a training collar he would'nt have to pick the dog up and put him in the kennel. Sure would have been nice to see the dog point over some birds. Deanne was the president and CEO of Snake Oil Inc.
Most trainers in this area are good. There are a few who think beating dogs and horses half to death is the way to do it.Those guys are sick crazy people. One day they will learn!
