Traffic Safety for Teens

A local man's passion that was born out of tragedy was recognized by state leaders Tuesday.

Paul Burris, the founder of Partners for Highway Safety, was handed a resolution from the Florida House of Representatives. Legislators say his efforts have saved the lives of local teens.

About 12 years ago Paul Burris' world changed, but Paul turned his grief into action and founded Partners for Highway Safety, which offers teen driving programs such as a two-day collision avoidance training.

Paul Burris says, “On the second day they are in the car for eight hours learning new training and skill on how to avoid collisions versus how to react to them.”

Tuesday, Burris was presented a resolution from the Florida House of Representatives. In the past four years, less than three percent of teen participants have had an accident.

Legislators say programs like this are lifesavers considering driver’s education is no longer mandatory.

Rep. Leslie Waters, (R) St. Petersburg, says, “So you learn by your father or someone else, since you're going to be driving for the rest of your life you may as well have some good skills.”
