Sandra Patterson, a 20-year-old tourist from New Zealand hitched a ride from Panama City from a man she knew as James.
When they reached Leon County, police say the man attacked Patterson, raping her and leaving her for dead. She suffered serious facial and head injuries that required reconstructive surgery.
In October 1999 investigators submitted evidence to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's crime lab. The made a hit in April 2001 and DNA evidence linked Willie Oliver to the crime.
Oliver is charged with sexual battery involving serious physical force and faces like in prison if convicted.
