Press Release:

(Feb. 18, 2010) – Tallahassee Mayor John Marks and other public officials will kick off our community’s first Diabetes Awareness Weekend with a proclamation during a press conference at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 26, at Pavilion 13 in Tallahassee’s Tom Brown Park.

The weekend’s events are sponsored by the Foundation for Leon County School and a variety of other business and organizations with the goal of focusing the community’s attention on increasing awareness of diabetes and raising funds for wellness programs in Leon County schools.

Diabetes affects 23.6 million children and adults in the United States and can lead to a variety of complications including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage, amputation, and even death.

Type 1diabetes, which is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, occurs when the body does not produce any insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar (glucose), starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Type 2 diabetes, which is the more common type, develops when a person’s body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. In the past, Type 2 diabetes was primarily found in adults, but due to the dramatic increase in obesity rates among children, a primary risk factor for Type 2 diabetes, it is increasingly being diagnosed in our youth. In fact, locally, one third of Leon County students enrolled in our public schools are at risk for Type 2 diabetes due to poor diet and lack of exercise.
