The clock is ticking on building a new school on Tallahassee's Southside. For every week that passes thousands of dollars are lost to inflation. Leon County school officials estimate as much as $30,000 a week, so needless to say time is of the essence.
It’s been 30 years since a new school was built on Tallahassee's Southside and it seems time is catching up. The money is in to build one, but for each week that passes without a site set in stone, the district loses thousands of dollars.
Paul Byrd, Leon County Schools Executive Director of Facilities, says, "Construction inflation is running between six and 12 percent per year. Based on those numbers it’s running between 15 and $30,000 a week."
Money that is deducted from the 13 and a half million set aside for the Southside school, combining Bond and Wesson Elementary, yet where to build the school is the million dollar question.
Bill Montford, Superintendent of Leon County Schools, says, "About a year. Site selection committee made a firm recommendation for new school to be built on Bond Site. The School Board considered recommendation, decided to send back to committee for further consideration."
Each time the building debate bounces back and fourth it pushes the opening date back as well.
Byrd adds, "At the early stage could have been opened in the fall delay the opening."
The 17-member site selection committee met Wednesday afternoon to vote on-site for the new school; they unanimously agreed on the Bond site for the new Southside school.
The site selection committee's recommendation will go Superintendent Montford and based on the committee decision he will make a recommendation to the School Board members to vote on at their next meeting.
