Suspicious Death

Police in Thomasville are investigating what they call a suspicious death of a 66-year-old woman.

From what we know this is being investigated as a homicide. Police say they found a gun in the house Monday night, but they won't release how the woman died. To make sure they're covering all bases, they're treating the case as a murder.

"It's going to feel funny, riding through here, looking at that house and she's not there no more."

James Cason remembers his 66-year-old neighbor, Carolyn Young, as a friendly woman with no enemies. However, he says Young's ex-husband found her dead in her house on Wall Street late Monday night, possibly murdered.

SGT Rachelle Denmark with the Thomasville Police Department says, "When it's a suspicious death and she was by herself at the time she died and there was a firearm in the vicinity, we do work it as a homicide."

Police responded to the scene around 11 p.m. Monday night, but neighbors say they heard what sounded like gunshots around 4 or 5 p.m.

James Cason, the victim's neighbor, says, "We thought it was firecrackers going off, so we stopped and looked down the street and didn't see anything, but I know a gunshot go off when I hear one."

Police say a gun was taken from the scene, but a cause of death has not been determined.

Earl McClain, also the victim’s neighbor, says, “Somebody could have robbed her, wanted her money or whatever. Knowing that she gets a check every Monday or whatever she had some money, they probably robbed her."

Neighbors say until this mystery is solved they will keep their doors locked and their loved ones close. Police officials say have no suspects in custody at this time.
