No Slacking Off

Just because the summer is still in session for area students, it doesn't mean school leaders are slacking off. Their sights are set on next year, and for some the bell rings in less than one week.

While the student body is gone for the summer, the heart of the school system is still ticking.

Bill Montford says, "Actually, summertime is the busiest time of the year for us because we are in the process of doing all of our budget work for next year."

Besides balancing the budget, Montford must map out the middle, high and elementary school leaders from the principal on down the chain of command. Randy Free is one of the newly appointed principals.

For teachers, the time between seasons is short lived. Summer is usually spent preparing for fall when a new school session starts.

Kim Ardley, a teacher at Belle Vue Middle School, says, "Preparing for school is demanding. Had plans to go out of town but spent summer here at Belle Vue organizing lessons."

School springs back into action Monday July 12 at year-round Belle Vue and it will be business as usual. As for the district with 33,000 students and 5,000 employees, the summer stretch is no vacation.

Friday, Belle Vue Middle School will hold a school-wide orientation from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. School for Belle Vue students starts Monday July 12. All other Leon County students head back on August 16.
