AP) A school in Mississippi has called off the annual senior dance after a lesbian student demanded she be allowed to bring her girlfriend.

The American Civil Liberties Union had demanded that the Itawamba County school district allow 18-year-old Constance McMillen to attend the prom with her date.

A school board statement Wednesday announced the district wouldn't host the April 2 prom at Itawamba County Agricultural High School.

McMillen wanted to escort her girlfriend, who is also a student. McMillen also was denied permission to wear a tuxedo.

A school district policy requires that dates be of the opposite sex.

The district's statement never mentioned McMillen's request. But officials said the change was made due to recent distractions. District officials say they hope private citizens will host a prom.

JP. I made that comment cause many people say that gay couples can not raise children straight. I was not knocking your way of raising your child. But now you see how us gay's feel when we hear that same comment. My daughter is very much boy crazy. I do not chose who she likes or dislikes. I pray though that when the time comes. She will pick a man over another woman. Due to the fact it is so hard to live in this world being gay. I would not chose that for anyone let alone my own daughter. My wife has raised a daughter age 29 that is married to a man and we are expecting our first grandchild in July. See straight folks seem to think one way. "GAYS ARE BAD". However we are not, if we are cut we bleed just as straights. My childs father is not a part of her life. He calls when it gets to bothering him that he has not done anything for her. He has not paid support in over a year. But no one will do anything for her. DHS does nothing but tell me they can not find him. I give them everyhing

Alright Mo, I’m on your side and you decide to bash me? I feel that the "She is taken care of better than any straight couple could take care of her," comment was a bit unnecessary. I am a mother and do not knock your ability to raise your child because of your sexual orientation, please do not knock mine.

Your are not to judge anyone Jack. That's God's job and let's hope he has the competence to judge correctly. He sees a gay man donating lots of more than the required (as called for in the Bible) to charity. He sees a gay man spending his weekend volenteering at homeless shelters or building for Habitat for Humanity. Then he sees a heterosexual man who call himself a Christian who occaisionally goes to church and says "if the poor want to eat, they should get a job". I think God would pick the gay man or I would anyway; however, it's not up to me or you either. There is no reason gay people should not have rights. They don't hurt you, your children, or your church. Tell us the real reason why you are against gay people! You trying to hide something? Are you secure in your own sexuality? Does you Craigslist post say "married so must be discreet"?
