Should Students Try For A Three Year Degree?

"I should graduate in four years, but I'll probably graduate early."
Some students are trying to earn their diplomas quicker nowadays to avoid breaking the bank ... with many entering college from high school with credits already in hand.

Joshua Adams who is trying to graduate early says,"I came in with 27 credit hours so I thought to myself- yea- I can knock it out in three or cut off maybe two years, maybe one year. So that's going to save maybe 10 thousand to 20 thousand dollars."

Or trying to squeeze a four year degree into three years.

Kallie Buchholz a FSU student says, "I know people that are getting a degree in three or graduating a semester early because it's a while year of credit, ya know?"

The three year plan may be a money-saving solution for some students and families, but self proclaimed 'Super Senior' Cory Malon a has a different take on the matter.

Cory Malon says, "The economy is so bad right now. There are no jobs- the longer I wait in college the better jobs there will be when I get out."

Yet others say, you should further your education instead of just waiting it out. Dr, William Hudson at FAMU says, "I would not necessarily say stay in undergraduate for five years because there are several opportunities in graduate programs they can take advantage of."

In the end- no matter how long it takes- students are getting their diplomas. Hudson says, "Graduation rates are improving. With this economic times and being prepared for the global market, students are trying to do things to make them prepared for the job opportunities that will become available."

FAMU says it is working on some new strategies and programs that will allow them to offer three year degree programs, but budget cuts are making that impossible, at least right now.
