Win Big By Giving Blood

High gas prices around the area have given local Red Cross donation centers a pretty enticing idea.

It takes less than a half hour and can save up to three lives. And as if that wasn't enough, how about the possibility of winning $1500 worth of gas?

"It's a region wide promotion, but it's a great opportunity to get a year's worth of free gas because it's a $1500 gas card and that should cover most anybody for about a year."

Such an incentive even puts a smile on the faces of some long time donors.

"Price of gas, yeah. Of course, I commute from Moultrie to Valdosta everyday so it would come in handy."

But for others, just knowing they're saving lives is reward enough.

"When you realize a few minutes of my time might mean a life to someone else and it might even mean my own someday or someone in my family. So giving blood is really painless and an excellent opportunity to serve others."

But Red Cross says offering promotions like the opportunity to win free gasoline is an important part of recruiting new donors and boosting the blood supply.

Officials say only three percent of Georgians actually donate their blood.

The drawing for the free gas cards will be held the day after Labor Day in Atlanta for all donors who register at the center.
