School Supply Giveaway

Students in one local county are looking forward to the start of a new school year, thanks to the generosity of a special organization. The Lowndes County Association of Ministries for the People has a lot to offer.

Lorine Sloan, a parent, says, "I got books, book bags, book covers, school supplies that they needed for school."

It’s that time of year where kids are saying good-bye to summer and hello to a new school year, but some families can't provide the school supplies their children need for the new school year. That's why an organization called LAMP is handing out bags full of school supplies to those children and families in need.

Mari Williams, the mother of a seventh grader, adds, "This is a blessing here. What LAMP is doing for everyone is a blessing."

Seventy nine more children were given back to school supplies this year compared to last.

Angela Barker, Director or New Horizons, says, "To see the appreciation and the gratitude of a child and to actually see them get excited to go to school for the first day, I mean, that's just overwhelming. It's better than Christmas."

A LAMP spokesperson says community donations are critical to the program's continued success. More than 400 bags were stuffed full of crayons, pencils and markers this year.

"It’s not a lot because they don't get the new clothes and things like that, but we do as much as we can."

Eligible families can still pick up supplies Tuesday morning. The back to school supplies program is in its fourth year. Program officials hope to continue meeting the growing demand for supplies each year.
