Football season is right around the corner and the folks in Valdosta will even have a brand new stadium to come with it.
Construction of the $7 million stadium will wrap up Friday after 7 1/2 months of intense labor. The brand new Bazemore-Hyder Stadium will seat more than 10,000 fans and feature very intimidating southside stands.
School officials are expecting a full house for the first game August 20.
Bill Aldrich, Associate Superintendent of Operations, says, "Well, it's not just a football team. This is the winningest high school football program in the nation. Six national championships and 23 state championships and it's just a big part of this community."
The only part of the construction phase left is laying the sprint turf over the gravel surface. Construction workers say after the turf is in they will be cleaning up and getting ready for that first game.
