Some Tallahassee Community college students spent the day reflecting on their time in the College Learning Success course.
While they're looking back, TCC says these courses prepare students for what's ahead.
"It's really turning out to be probably one of the most effective success interventions that TCC has to offer," said Sheri Rowland, TCC Director of Student Success Center.
A recent study by the Community College Research Center finds 60 percent of Florida students who don't take classes like this end up dropping out, not earning a degree, or transferring to a university.
Marnecia Chandler took this class two years ago. Looking back, she admits she could've been part of that statistic.
"If it was not for this class I think I'd still be at TCC trying to earn my AA degree," said Chandler.
But instead she's heading to Florida State University to major in criminal justice.
A four to ten percent budget cut for all Florida universities and colleges is looming, but TCC says these success courses will remain intact. Students now taking the class say there's really no other option.
"Being in this class really does make you put goals in front of yourself and make you excited about those goals so you want to set your priorities so you can accomplish them," said TCC student Courtney Glavin.
Armed with evidence that these courses work, this won't be the last group of students reflecting on their time in the College Learning Success course.
At TCC the course is mandatory for students who take two or more remedial classes. About 64 sections will be offered come fall.
