Florida's environmental leaders are encouraging citizens to find simple ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.

And a new campaign draws a bulls eye on all those plastic bags we get at the store.

Children stuffed handful after handful of plastic bags into a recycling ship beached at the Florida capitol. They're hoping kids can help get their parents on board to start recycling all those plastic bags they get at the store.

"We don't recycle them. We keep them and reuse them for different activities and we almost never throw them away," said Brendan O'Healaigh who was at the capitol with Swift Creek Middle School's Green Club.

"Most people don't take the time to recycle them. They think, oh, it's just one bag, but they don't realize that these bags end up being everywhere," fellow Green Club member Emma Kearley said.

"Across America, some 90 billion plastic bags are used on an annual basis. 90 billion. And unfortunately in Florida, we're only recycling about 12% of the plastic bags," said Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Micchael Sole.

"It's very easy to do. You just have to remember to bring them to the store," said shopper Dianne Speake, who recycles plastic bags about once a month. Would it surprise you to know that only 12% of the bags ever end up being recycled? "No, not really," she said.

Florida's Department of Environmental Protection pushed for an all out ban on plastic bags earlier this year. That's not on the table anymore, the secretary said, but lots of consumers have stepped up voluntarily since then. Geri Dottorelli has been using cloth bags for years.

"It's part of my routine, yeah. When I forget, then I feel really guilty," she said as she loaded her bags into her car.

The state of Florida is trying to make recycling plastic bags part of every consumers routine. A new web site allows folks to log on and find every recycling spot within 50 miles.

"This web site allows you to put in your zip code and it will show you every store withing 10, 25,or 50 miles that recycles plastic bags," said Phil Rozenski with recycler Kelix Poly.

We punched in our zip code here at the station and found 19 recycling spots within ten miles.
