The 23rd Annual Peacock Festival drew first-timers Rhonda Tessier and her two boys from Adel.

"It's just a nice day to get out with my two sons on Mother's Day weekend," said Tessier, as she laid on a blanket waiting for the parade to start. "So we're spending the weekend together."

To regulars like the Hansford family from Valdosta.

"Peacocks. There was no peacocks," said Naomi Hansford, while eating a chicken kebab. "We thought we'd see like peacocks here but maybe next time."

There may not be many peacocks as in past years. But we tracked down one. His name is Charlie and he's their mascot.

Organizers put together the festival to honor its namesake.

Pavo in Latin means Peacock.

"The peacock is a beautiful bird and it's very colorful," said Eileen Weiss, president of the Pavo Civic Club.

The name dates back to the 20th Century, when the city was called McDonald.

And because another town in Georgia already had that name, they had to change it.

"The post office came to and asked us to change our name. And the Peacock family wanted it named after them," said Weiss.

Since then Pavo's plumed friends have left their mark.

At the festival, there was everything from a handmade peacock quilt, to peacock tee-shirts, to peacock fans.

Even a parade to celebrate their plumage.

For the first time, our very own Shonda Knight was the Grand Marshal.

"It's been so much fun, all the great southern hospitality," said Shonda, with her beautiful baby boy. "All the excitement from the crowd. It's been a wonderful time."

The festival, also known as Peacock Day, is held every year on the second Saturday of May.
