Wakulla DCF Closing for Good

In Wakulla County there's only one place to apply for food stamps, Medicaid and cash assistance, but in a matter of weeks that place will close.

Vicki Abrams with the Department of Children and Families says, “We were looking at ways to make the program more efficient and our lease is running out, so we're relocating those folks into the Tallahassee office.”

Eight employees at the Department of Children and Families will be packing their bags and moving north come September. The agency is closing its doors in Crawfordville, leaving some 1,400 client families with only one place to go for face-to-face contact.

Parrish Barwick, Wakulla County Commissioner, says, “Anytime our citizens have to commute to Tallahassee to get services they once had it creates tension felt by clients and Wakulla County commissioners who strongly oppose DCF's move out of town.”

Vicki Abrams, DCF Spokeswoman, says, “Any commissioner would be concerned about a loss of program in their community. Again, I want to say they're not losing a service, just a way to access that service.”

Abrams says clients can access those services via mail, fax or telephone. She says even though the scenery may change at DCF the quality of service will stay the same.
