An eight-year old girl’s death in Florida has changed state law and serves as a warning to drowsy drivers.

RonShay Dugan was killed in Tallahassee when the school bus she was riding in was hit by a drowsy driver in a cement truck.

Tuesday in Tallahassee, RonShay’s family stood beside representative Alan Williams, who helped pass the RonShay Dugan Act to increase awareness of the dangers of driving while sleepy.

RonShay’s mother, Cavetta Corbett, says it’s too late for her daughter, but she hopes others can be saved.

“It will definitely make a difference in other people’s lives and hopefully prevent this from happening to others; good kids, adults, or whatever,” said Corbett.

The RonShay Dugan Act designates the first week of September as Drowsy Driving Week.

I'm against drowsy drivers as well...at some point in all of our lives, we are all guilty of driving a little tired here and there. For those that do cause harm while driving sleepy/drowsy, this is applicable. The problem I have with this whole act is how it's directed towards the cement truck driver. To my knowledge, there has been nothing conclusive to determine that he was driving drowsy to this day! When do facts make a difference in decisions? It was an accident.

So is this a law now?? WCTV reported the other day that it was a law. What does this law do? does it provide additional fines or charges or mandatory jail time? As I understand it, all this law does is promotes awareness that we already know. SO how is this a milestone?? What a load of horse manure. Your article also made a comment concerning Ronshay having a guardian. Why? Was her mother a crack star or unfit? Or was she just to busy to be bothered by having a child until she died?

No - I don't want guns on campus

The faculty senate at Valdosta State University is taking a stand against concealed guns on campus. They unanimously passed a resolution last week to keep guns out of the classrooms and off university grounds. The faculty senate is standing in opposition to house bill 981. The bill proposed allowing citizens the right to carry concealed weapons into bars.. churches.. college campuses and even elementary schools.
