Two weeks after Hurricane Charley left a path of devastation and despair, Gov. Jeb Bush and renowned religious leader Franklin Graham gathered with relief workers Friday to celebrate the spirit of recovery.

Several hundred people attended a non-denominational memorial service in Port Charlotte for all those who suffered losses during the storm.

The governor told the crowd, “We are on the road to recovery in southwest Florida.”

Bush praised the spirit of volunteerism shown in the last couple of weeks and the compassion of people from across the nation.

Religious leaders from the community who joined with the governor said the storm brought out the best in many people.

Graham is the son of evangelist Billy Graham and head of the international aid organization Samaritan's Purse.
