Controversy Over the American Flag
Controversy is brewing over a flag pole in Woodstock, Georgia. A homeowner is asked to take down the pole flying an American flag.

Jon Hansen has lived in Woodstock's Summerchase subdivision for a decade.
The disabled army veteran and former law enforcement officer has flown an American flag outside his Summer Point Drive home since moving in.

A month ago - Hansen says he replaced A wooden post with a more prominent pole for his stars and stripes.
But he says the 16 foot tall fixture isn't flying well with the Summerchase Homeowners Association.

Hansen says, "According to their rules, it's because I am installing a permanent fixture without prior approval... even though there was a post there already."

Hansen says there is nothing in the HOA covenant that mentions a flagpole.

"I thought since it was a replacement, that I wouldn't have to do it, but I had to turn in a form to get approval."

He says that request was denied. And Hansen received notice - he has to pay up.

"Fines have been levied against you totaling 300 dollars - continue at 25 dollars a day per violation. It's either remove it, or pay the fees. "

Hansen says he's not paying those fees. And is willing to take his flagpole fight to court.

The Board agreed to let him have his flag !!! Way to go Jon !!! Now when did the board meet to make this decision. I don't recall it being advertised as proper procedures would have it.

The Summerchase Board has their priorities all mixed up. We need patriots we don't need all of the tacky looking portable basketball goals. H.R.42 passed into law in 2005 permits residents in condo complexes and HOA's to fly the flag. The Summerchase covenents say nothing about flag poles. I agree that the HOA only wants to get into other peoples business. This HOA has been run like a club for many many years and not like a business. Some people on the board think they are more important then they are. "Dear Flag of our Country whose stars and whose bars Call all her seed to defend her God help us to be true to the red, white and blue Her principals never surrender"

I'm part of the Summerchase subdivision, and I've seen the flag in person. The flag pole looks like something that should belong in front of a bank, not a house. I can understand why the home owner association dissaproved.
