Downtown Thomasville Looking Forward to Future Development

New development in downtown Thomasville is a sure sign of a thriving economy. Thomasville's Main Street director says in the last 20 years more than $400 million has been invested in building up downtown Thomasville.

Sharlene Celaya, Main Street director, says, "Our latest Coup D'etat is the flowers corporation. The DDA purchased that and restored it for flowers and we've added 120 workers downtown, which is quite nice."

Visitors from Tallahassee say downtown is a secret getaway for them.

Electra Pacchioli, visiting from Tallahassee, says, "All the shops, if you're looking for something unique for a special spot, it's great, you don't have the crowds of the big city."

Celaya says downtown shoppers and businesses keep the economy there booming, and the goal is to see downtown flourish for many, many years.

The latest in downtown development comes in the form of a six-story building called Jefferson Place. It was bought by the Downtown Development Authority to be turned into office space."

Celaya adds, "We have wonderful plans for that. We are going to do some improvements on the inside and work diligently on finding someone to come and use the space."

Celaya credits the success of downtown thus far to local folks and visitors from surrounding counties.

Celaya says, "They love the town; they support it, they shop here."

She hopes for continued support to keep downtown Thomasville the shopping hub of the area. Main Street officials say the renovation of Jefferson Place will start immediately. The exact date the offices will open has not yet been finalized.
