A Behind the Scenes Look at Tallahassee PD Training

Havana, Florida -July 20, 2012

Officers with the Tallahassee Police Department are training at the Florida Public Safety Institute in Havana. They're going over various training scenarios and tactics, honing their skills here so they can save lives out there.

"When you come under intense situations on the street, you've really got to train in here to replicate the stress you feel under street conditions," says Officer Clay Fallis.

During their training, officers learn to use a variety of non-lethal weapons like a bean-bag shotgun and taser... Tools that can be very effective in subduing a suspect.

The amps that go through a taser are less than what are running through your string of Christmas lights. But it's more than enough to take down most suspects.

The tase only last five seconds. The sensation feels like a jackhammer going off all over your body. Once it's over, you feel completely normal.

Police say the taser is one of their most effective tools. Officer Jeffery Mazerac says it played a key role in helping him break up a brawl.

"I deployed the taser. It worked successfully. I was able to take him into custody with very little injury and without having any further injury to anyone else," says Mazerac .

TPD says its training tactics are constantly evolving, so officers can stay prepared and the bad guys stay behind bars.
