An entire family is devastated.
"He sacrificed his life for somebody else," said family friend Stephen Watts.
A tragic drowning incident Saturday took the lives of two of two people.
"Very shocking moment man, it was very shocking," Watts said about hearing the news of the incident.
According to Madison County Sheriff Deputies, 61-year-old James Bellamy's grandsons were playing in a man-made pond at his home in Greenville.
It was around 8 'o clock at night, he noticed the boys, ages 8 and 11, were in trouble and went to help.
Family members said Bellamy jumped in and tried to save his grandsons.
Once they noticed he was in trouble, too, they tried to help, but no one could swim.
With a rope attached to a log, they were able to pull out the 11-year-old boy.
A dive team member pulled the bodies of Bellamy and his 8-year-old grandson out of the pond around 10:30 p.m.
"He really loved his grandkids, he loved them. I think he would really do almost anything for 'em which you see he did," Watts added.

Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart confirms that on Saturday evening the 4th day of August 2012 at approximately 8:30 PM, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call for an immediate response to a possible accidental drowning.
Sheriff’s Office personnel, Hamburg and Greenville Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Madison County EMS as well as other volunteers in the immediate area responded. The scene was located at 1806 NE Reaper church road in Greenville Florida.
Preliminary investigation indicates that two juvenile grandsons were recreating in a family pond when the grandfather, James Cornell Bellamy (DOB: 08/26/1950) recognized the grandsons were in distress. The grandfather was able to assist one of the grandsons to the bank of the pond and while attempting to rescue the second grandson his heroic efforts failed as he himself became subdued in the water with the second grandson who was 8 years old.
Madison County Sheriff’s Office dive team member Sgt. Dennis Pitts responded to the scene and was able to locate and recover both, James Cornell Bellamy and the grandson in the area of the pond where they were last seen at approximately 10:30 PM. The investigation remains’ pending the final medical examiners report and has all indications of a tragic accidental drowning.

A local man and his grandson died in what officials say was an accidental drowning.
Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart says the incident happened Saturday evening in Greenville.
The man was attempting to save his two grandsons that were drowning in a man made pond near their home.
Stewart says the man was able to save one of the kids, but drowned attempting to save the other.
