On Thursday, August 1, 2013, Officer Capece was performing a routine perimeter check of the Airport when he discovered a perimeter fence breach by a local wildlife resident. Sitting in the middle of the perimeter road blocking Officer Capece’s path was an alligator.
Officer Capece, knowing his limitations in agility compared to that of the reptile, immediately called for backup and maintained surveillance of the animal from behind his patrol vehicle.
Officer Pulido arrived on scene and calmly approached the animal, risking his life to protect his squad mate, used his collapsible baton to encourage the animal to open his jaw and then pinned the lower jaw to the ground.
Officer Pulido then grabbed the alligator behind the head and successfully captured him and put him back over the fence.
