On September 19th at 7:53 pm, the Tallahassee Police Department was advised of a traffic crash involving a pedestrian in front of 2984 Apalachee Parkway, near the pep Boys Auto Shop.
Paul Gregory Edel advised Tallahassee Police that he was driving a 2000 black Toyota Tacoma pickup eastbound in the 2900 block of Apalachee Parkway when he suddenly heard a loud 'thump' noise. He pulled his vehicle ahead in the far right lane and turned the hazard lights on. Edel walked back to where he heard the 'thump' noise and saw a black male lying in the street. Edel stated that the pedestrian was bleeding and not moving at all.
Edel reprts that as he traveled East on Apalachee Parkway, he did not see the pedestrian, later identified as John Christie walking in the roadway. Edel's pickup truck sustained medium front end damage and the right side of the windshield was smashed in due to the impact of Christie striking the windshield.
A witness on scene, advised that as he was leaving the parking lot of Pep Boys Auto Shop, when he heard a noise. He stated that while in his vehicle, he turned to his left and saw a man 'flying in the air'. The witness then made a left turn to go eastbound on Apalachee Parkway, and pulled up right in front of where a man was lying on the ground and bleeding in the roadway.
When Christie was struck by the Tacoma, he was wearing dark clothing and located in the far right lane of eastbound traffic. After the impact, Christie was found lying on the ground on the south side of the 2900 block of Apalachee Parkway. He was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for multiple injuries sustained in the collision, The vehicle was towed from the scene for evidence.
Christie was pronounced deceased at 8:41 pm.
Due to the nature of the incident, a TPD Traffic Homicide investigator responded to the scene.

[UPDATE] Tallahassee, FL - September 19, 2012 - 11:15 p.m.
TPD do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in Wednesday's accident that killed a pedestrian. Officer believe a pickup truck was the vehicle that hit the person. The driver of a red SUV was a witness to the accident and stayed on scene to help with the investigation.
The pickup truck driver also stayed on scene and is cooperating with law enforcement.
"Our investigators are here," said TPD Officer David Northway. "You can see our traffic homicide investigators are still on the roadway trying to track the information and see and gather the evidence. So they have not even had the chance to speak with the driver of the vehicle yet."
The victim that died at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital has not been identified until the family has been notified.

At approximately 7:55pm, a vehicle was heading east on Apalachee Parkway when it collided with a pedestrian on foot.
The pedestrian was rushed to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital where they later died.
There was no cross walk where the pedestrian was hit.
