At around 10:00 p.m. last night, residents in the Briarwood Manor Apartments, located at 4495 Shelfer Road, noticed flames coming from an upstairs apartment unit and called 9-1-1. Firefighters from Fire Station 3 were first on the scene and reported heavy fire venting through a bedroom window. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and reported no one inside the apartment unit. One adult and one child lived in the apartment and were not home at the time of the blaze. There was significant fire and smoke damage throughout the involved apartment as well as water damage to the apartment unit downstairs. The two residents in the upstairs unit as well as the two residents in the downstairs unit were displaced as a result of the damages. The Red Cross assisted the fire victims at the scene and no injuries were reported at the fire. TFD was assisted by the Tallahassee Police Department and City of Tallahassee Utilities.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Tallahassee Fire Department, Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and State Fire Marshal's Office. Damages from the fire are estimated at $120,000.
