AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) -- A Richmond County sheriff's deputy has died from injuries he suffered in an off-duty motorcycle crash.

The Augusta Chronicle reports Alton Creech died Friday at Georgia Regents Medical Center, where the 32-year-old deputy had been airlifted the previous day after crashing his Harley-Davidson motorcycle into the back of a car on Interstate 20.

Capt. Steve Morris of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office says the motorcycle left skid marks 90-feet long, indicating Creech tried to stop. The driver of the car that was struck wasn't injured.

Richmond County Sheriff's deputy Billy Hultman asked gatherers at a candlelight vigil Friday to pray for Creech's wife and family.

Creech was known at the sheriff's office for his marksmanship skills. He won the agency's "top shot" competition three years in a row.
