Villa Rica, GA -- January 21, 2012

The mother of a Georgia soldier who was killed in Iraq says burglars broke into her home and stole combat medals her son earned for his military service.

Cindy Hardegree of Villa Rica says the awards and badges included a Gold Star that the Defense Department gave the family after her son's funeral.

The medals belonged to Army Sgt. Mike Hardegree, who died along with six other soldiers in Iraq after their vehicle flipped over in September 2007.

Associated Press reports that the soldier's mother says the burglars got away with $10,000 worth of goods from her home after the break-in last Wednesday. She says she misses the Gold Star the most because she'd had it made into a locket that she would wear.

My heart breaks for this mother for the loss of her son and now for this. I am sure it must be like losing him all over again. Hope they catch the people that broke into her home and stole her heart along with her property. AND I hope they are put under the jail for a very long time!

My Prayers goes to Mother who loss her son in Iraq It's sad that burglars would break into house of a Mother whos son gave his life defending our freedom in this Great Nation. It is that these burglars would steal medals of this young man who gave his life. I hope that they are arrested and given a long prison sentence for this.
