An early morning car fire sent one person to the hospital with severe burns. TPD AND TFD responded shortly after six this morning. Once they were on scene, it quickly became apparent that it was more than just a typical car fire.
Rescuers and investigators arrived at the scene to find a white Oldsmobile Aurora completely engulfed in flames. Officers say one person was inside the vehicle.
Says Mike Bellamy with the Tallahassee Fire Department: "One patient was treated on scene with severe burn injuries and transported by Leon County EMS to Tallahasssee Memorial Hospital."
The car was found in the parking lot of the Animal Aid Society. The road was closed for hours. Managers at the Animal Society said they were able to reopen later in the morning. They said the car did not belong to any of their employees. The TPD Violent Crimes Unit worked the scene all morning on Thursday.
Says Robert Grasso with the Tallahassee Police Department: "Anytime a person is involved in this type of incident, they're gonna get called out for this."
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as well as the State Fire Marshall were also called in to assist. People arriving at the Animal Society were surprised to see such an active crime scene.
One Tallahassee resident, Ben Boynton says: "It certainly seems suspicious if all that's involved in a single car situation but evidently this person got himself in some serous trouble."
Shortly after 1pm, the car was taken away and the parking lot reopened.
The victim was originally taken to TMH, but firefighters say it is not uncommon for people with severe burns to be tranferred to another hospital. There are a lot of unanswered questions involved in this case. Of course we will continue to follow this story and bring you any new information as it becomes available.
