Chlorine Leak At Madison Plant, Two Rushed To Hospital [GALLERY]

At 4:45 p.m., the Tallahassee Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team responded to Madison County to the report of a chlorine leak at the City of Madison Waste Water Treatment Facility. City of Madison officials contacted the Tallahassee Fire Department for assistance after a leak was discovered in a one-ton chlorine cylinder located at the City of Madison Waste Water Treatment Facility. Madison Fire Rescue crews were able to stop the leak prior to the arrival of TFD but were unsure if the product was secure and how much product if any was still in the air. The TFD Hazardous Materials team entered the building in Level A encapsulated suits and determined the product was secure and sampled air quality to determine the area was safe.

At 7:30 p.m., the area was deemed safe for occupancy and turned back over to City of Madison Officials. No injuries were reported after the arrival of the Tallahassee Fire Department although officials with the City of Madison did report that two people were transported to area hospitals prior to our arrival.

The Tallahassee Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team serves Region 2 of the State of Florida's 7-region response area. Region 2 covers 17 counties from the Apalachicola River to the Suwannee River.


WCTV has learned that one victim was taken to the Madison County Memorial Hospital, and the other victim was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

The victim taken to TMH re-entered the building repeatedly to try to shut off the chlorine leak.


Madison County, FL - According to the City of Madison, around 13 businesses have been evacuated.

Local homes have been told that they may need to evacuate.

The Madison Correctional Institution has been placed on lock down.


Madison County, FL -Two City employees were transported to two different hospitals following the leak.

The leak has been stopped, but a plume of chlorine is still sitting over the area. Harvey Greene Drive is still shut down, and will remain shut down until the plume is gone.

Madison County, FL - 5-6 businesses have already been evacuated, according to the Madison City Manager. The entire road has been blocked off about a mile around the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

According to Madison County Emergency Management, the leak began around 3:30pm. The leak has been contained, but buildings in the area are being evacuated. The plant is located on Harvey Greene Drive.
