City Commissioners Talk Tennessee Street Safety

Tallahassee, Florida- September 12, 2012

City leaders in Tallahassee say making West Tennessee Street safer is priority.

There are several items on the agenda at the city commission meeting tonight, and one of those is the West Tennessee corridor between Monroe and Ocala. Basically they want to make it safer for the high number of people walking and driving in that area.

A project manager with the Florida Department of Transportation evaluated the area and presented their findings.
One big project they'd like to tackle is funding for a corridor study on Tennessee between Monroe and Ocala.

That study would include evaluating the possibility of reducing the 6 lanes down to 4 to accommodate a bike and pedestrian lane. They say that could take up to a year.

Other items on a more immediate to do list include, changing speed limits, adding no turn on red signs where appropriate, and add crosswalks on 3 spots between Brevard and Copeland to eliminate jaywalking.

One commissioner asked about the possibility of pedestrian overpasses. The representative for FDOT says that would be quite costly and there's just not enough room.

We will keep you updated as this project moves forward.
