Electric rates down 27 percent, Gas rates down 33 percent since 2009.
City of Tallahassee electric and natural gas customers will see lower utility bills effective Oct. 1. Electric rates will decrease 1.2 percent while natural gas rates will decrease 8.7 percent.
With the newly announced rate reduction, City electric rates have decreased 27 percent since January 2009, and natural gas rates have decreased 33 percent for the same period. Overall, customers’ annual energy bills will be approximately $140 million less than bills in January 2009.
“As the #1 Public Utility in America, we are committed to helping customers save energy and money while providing the best service possible,” said Mayor Pro Tem Andrew Gillum, lead commissioner on the City's Financial Viability of the Government target issue committee. “Our investment in modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art operations will continue to result in long-term fuel savings and environmental efficiency.”
"Our residential rates remain below the statewide average and our commercial rates are among the lowest in the state," said Reese Goad, director of Utility Business and Customer Services for the City. "We’re also extremely pleased that our rates for small businesses are the lowest of all utilities in the entire state.”
Customers can save even more money by taking advantage of the City’s many other Energy Smart Plus (e+) programs, such as free energy audits, ceiling insulation grants, energy-efficient appliance rebates and the interactive e+ Online account management tool. With cooler weather on the horizon, it also pays to have home heating systems examined for efficient use.
