MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Coast Guard crewmembers in Miami Beach have offloaded more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine interdicted at sea.
Officials put the estimated wholesale value of the drugs at $20 million.
A Coast Guard aircraft spotted a go-fast vessel with suspicious packages on board off the coast of the Dominican Republic on April 21st. The Coast Guard Cutter Spencer launched an armed helicopter and a boat crew that intercepted the vessel in international waters. Twenty-five packages of cocaine were found on board.
Two suspected smugglers on board were taken into custody.
More than $1 billion in illicit narcotics have been seized by the Coast Guard and its partners since June 2012.
