Cobb School District Delays Common Core Vote

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Cobb County school board has delayed a vote on whether to overturn its decision not to purchase math textbooks aligned with national standards.

Board Chairman Randy Scamihorn told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he wants to give board members more time to study their options. A vote was initially scheduled for Thursday.

The board voted in April not to purchase new textbooks designed to meet the Common Core, a set of national standards.

Several board members who opposed the purchase said earlier this month they are not sure how long the standards will last and whether textbooks are needed given technological changes. Other members of the board and some teachers say the issue has become politicized and have warned that student performance in math will suffer.
