Decorative Contact Lenses - Hazardous, Doctors Say

Updated: Fri 10:31 PM, Oct 05, 2012

Tallahassee, FL - Eye doctors are warning parents and teenagers about the dangers of non-prescription decorative contact lenses.

The lenses are an increasingly popular costume idea, as Halloween approaches, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends to anyone who plans to wear decorative contact lenses to obtain a valid prescription, buy them from a licensed eye care professional, and always get an eye exam.

Dr. Tiffany Malone, Optometrist: "it's very dangerous because these contacts go into your eyes, and they actually can cause a very severe infection, which can lead to permananet vision lost and even blindness at times because the infection can spread rapidly."

Doctors say you should always follow the directions for cleaning, disinfecting, and wearing the decorative lenses.
