TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Defense is warning Fla. Gov. Rick Scott about the likely impact of looming budget cuts.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter on Friday wrote to Scott and other governors whose states will be deeply affected by automatic federal budget cuts scheduled to take effect.

Carter stated in his letter that 31,000 civilian employees could be furloughed up to 22 days.

The department has estimated the furloughs would result in a payroll reduction of $185 million to the Florida employees.

Scott in recent days has been harshly critical of both Congress and President Barack Obama for failing to reach a deal to avoid the cuts. He said Friday that neither the president nor members of Congress should get paid until they solve the problem.
