Domestic Violence Coordinating Council Sponsors "Behind the Door" Rallying March

[UPDATE] Tallahassee, FL - September 25, 2012

Experts say a woman is assaulted or beaten every nine seconds in the United States.

Survivors and victim advocates are working to put an end to domestic violence in our community.

Florida State University's Institute for Family Violence Studies and the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council is sponsoring "Behind the Door."

They hosted a dinner at the Turnbull Center Tuesday evening, September 25, 2012, but the evening began with a rallying march to help end the silence on domestic violence.

Too much is happening behind closed doors. That's the topic of a domestic violence awareness event getting underway right now in Tallahassee.

Florida State University's Institute for Family Violence Studies and the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council is sponsoring the "Behind the Door," rallying march.

Marchers aren't just converging here, a group is also leaving FAMU and another leaving the Florida capitol. Everyone will end up at the Turnbull Center on Pensacola Street.

That's where two women who know first hand the dangers of domestic violence will address the crowd.

We featured one of those women's story in an exclusive interview yesterday Monday on WCTV.

Cynthia Williams had served 23 years in the U.S. Army when she was sentenced and spent five years in a military prison for fatally stabbing her husband.

She says many years of abuse led to that tragic day. And she'll be talking about that here tonight.

This event, including the dinner is free and open to the public. The dinner gets underway at 6 p.m. so people still have time to meet us at the Turnbull Center.
